The Power of Now
Hi there!

I am back in Houston… ready to get going on my new journey (damn, I’m all sappy these days).

I’m not going make a post about my experiences moving because that would be WAY too fascinating.

I want to talk about my recent transition to really be in the moment. The inspiration has come from a book called The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle. I was actually listening to the audiobook version of it.

There is such amazing power in being in the moment. There is sometimes too much energy consumed by thinking in the past or the future.

I remember back in the day I used to have so much anxiety about telling anyone remotely bad news. I’d always do things at the last minute because I’d fear the other person would react negatively. One example is a time in high school where I needed to tell my band director I was going to New York for a gaming tournament. I was so scared that I didn’t tell him at all and then pretty much told a lie when I came back. This was totally ridiculous in retrospect, and if it happened again, I would have handled myself totally differently.

How my life has changed…

We also think about our future and all the things that can go wrong constantly. We have dreams, and yet we think of all the things that can go wrong instead of pursuing them with the power of now. If you really think about it, it’s absurd! How are we to know what will happen. We can’t predict the future and to assume all the negative things will happen is actually down right wrong in reality. However, people tend to think that that voice in our heads (thoughts) is a representation of who we are. We form our reality around it. These thoughts are responsible for all of the negative emotions and actions in our world.

To break free, you must be conscious of those thoughts in your head… that ego of yours. The voice in your head telling you what will or won’t happen in the future… even the past! If you detach yourself from these thoughts you will begin to suppress them. The ego hides when it is acknowledged.

I truly agree with Tolle that much of the world’s problems stems from people’s obsession with their ego. That their whole sense of self is made up of their thoughts. There is a deeper part of ourselves. I mean… think about it!!! Do you seriously think we are born with all these negative thoughts and reactions we have today? They were accumulated from years of experiences and are usually based on our first or predominant language.

This post is getting a little too long, but I will conclude with what I am going to do.

I will become conscious of all my negative thoughts and feelings. I will realize that these thoughts and feelings do not represent who I am. They are just a manifestation of my human mind. I will not get mad at anyone even if they blatantly attack me because I know they are doing something out of their control. I will not get frustrated when my parent’s ask me to do any chores. I will smile happily, do it, and appreciate every moment. Did you know that Buddhist Monks made cleaning a huge part of their lives because it made them focus in the present moment where nothing but inner peace can exist.

This is definitely a new chapter in my life. Sure, I’ll made mistakes and react negatively to people, but I will be aware of them and improve. I will walk through this world with ease… with peace.

Stillness…

Carl
