Breaking free from a weekend of laziness
July 16th, 2007 Posted in DailyI really didn’t get much accomplished this weekend. However, it can be argued I did a lot by chilling with my friends in Dallas.
This post is going to be a quick post about productivity. The goal is for me to objectively write about it, so I can change my mind on it. I think a better way to say it would be a change of mental state.
The first thing I’ll say is that I’m pretty much an all or nothing guy. I am either 100 percent dedicated to something or I’m not doing much of anything. This idea was reinforced after reading Tyler’s post on http://realsocialdynamics.blogspot.com on himself. He mentions that he is also an all or nothing guy. For example, he became a self-help guru for guys by going out 7 days a week for a long long time. This type of dedication is something that mirrors myself.
The problem is that I am still a human being. I am still vulnerable to distractions like everyone else.
How do I differ? I have the ability to realize that I am being lazy. I also have a decent understanding of why I do the things I do. By objectifying my actions, I can change them. Well… you need some motivation to change as well.
This is exactly what I’m going to do.
Change my behavior.
From now on, I am going to become a productivity beast. I will cut all the crap out of my life that seem to scramble my mind. I will cut out television (done), unnecessary websites, unimportant e-mail, unproductive conversations, and more.
I will also use my time better. Most of my inspiration comes from the book, The Four-Hour Work Week. It makes you realize how unproductive we really are. We really need to re-evaluate how we work in this age. The 9-5 day is really just a figment of our past when people worked in factories doing tedious manual labor. It’s not human. There are also many simple techniques out there to help you do more with less time (80/20 rule, and giving yourself a small amount of time to finish a task).
I’m going to end the post now because I will touch on this subject a lot more on my other blogs I will be soon working on. Keep in mind that productivity is just a means to an end. I see so many people who get a lot things done, but they are completely valueless. Well, it does make you look like you’re working hard to your old boss.
The world is changing too quickly to rely on society.
Peacefully yours,
Carl
